Séance du séminaire de l'aire Irlande le jeudi 18 janvier 2024 de 16h30 à 18h en salle Denizot (B0.553): Karina BENAZECH WENDLING (Université de Lorraine) pour une conférence intitulée: "

"Colonies of converts in 19th-century Ireland: Othering Irish land and people?"

This contribution stems from the discovery of an overlooked aspect of Irish historiography, which though part of the narrow field of the Irish Famine and religious conflicts, plays an important role in Irish nationalist discourse, that is to say the phenomenon of souperism or the bribery of souls with soup. Indeed, my doctoral research has brought to light the intricate interplay between the use of the Irish language by Protestant missions in Ireland and the catholicization of Irish nationalism. Relying on these findings, this seminar will examine the various processes of Othering they initiated. Through this exploration, we seek to foster a deeper understanding of the profound social transformations they triggered.
